Volunteers can have tremendous impact
Every Friday afternoon, Ryan makes the long commute after work from the suburbs to Sarah’s Circle to volunteer his time. Ryan, without fail, has made his way to us during the hottest part of summer and the coldest part of winter. Originally, he came to us with an interest in teaching computer classes to the woman. He has provided individualized special instruction to women, helping them learn how to create an Excel spreadsheet, how to search the internet for specific information, even helping them determine the best means of getting a computer set up in their new apartment. The women ask regularly when Ryan’s coming and are excited to see him each time he walks in the door. He has made an impact on the daily lives of our women and done so with joy and kindness.
Volunteers bring essential life enrichment to our women
Volunteers are an essential part of the daily lives of the women served at Sarah’s Circle. In 1912 a group of women factory workers organized and fought not only for better working conditions, but more fulfilling lives. Their song “Bread and Roses,” spoke volumes: “Hearts starve as well as bodies… Yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses too.” While the staff and agency as a whole, provide the women with “bread;” safety, food, clothing, referrals, and more, volunteers such as Ryan provide the women with “roses,” the enriching aspects of life. Volunteers present arts & crafts projects, lead creative writing groups, teach yoga classes, facilitate lively bingo games, serve meals with a smile and much more. They truly become intertwined in all the daily activity of Sarah’s Circle.
Sharing talents and passions
Each volunteer has an opportunity to share their talents and passions with the women and transfer that excitement to them. During Fiscal Year 2006, 344 volunteers gave over 3,164 hours of service to Sarah’s Circle. Volunteers bring extra life and joy to the space of Sarah’s Circle. We extend a generous thank you to these caring individuals who bring “roses” to the women of Sarah’s Circle.
There are many different ways for volunteers to make a difference at Sarah’s Circle. If you or your group is interested in volunteer opportunities, please contact Molly Sass, Volunteer Coordinator at 773. 728.1991, ext. 303. Volunteer Application.pdf
