September is Hunger Action Month, a time to raise awareness about hunger in our communities and take action. For individuals experiencing homelessness, hunger is a daily reality that compounds their struggles. At Sarah’s Circle, we understand that the lack of access to nutritious food is a barrier to stability and well-being, which is why our food program is an essential part of the services we provide.
Hunger and homelessness are deeply intertwined, especially for women facing extreme poverty. According to Feeding America, nearly 34 million people in the U.S. are food insecure. Those experiencing homelessness often face hunger at much higher rates, as limited resources and access to food can force them to make impossible choices.
At Sarah’s Circle, we believe that access to nutritious food is a basic human right. Our food programs ensure that the women we serve receive nutritious meals every day, helping them to regain strength and focus on building a brighter future, thanks to our hardworking staff and partnerships with local organizations like the Greater Chicago Food Depository, corporations such as Conagra, as well as support from generous donors. Last year we served 61,950 meals across all programs. We also run a food pantry for our Permanent Supportive Housing clients, which is supplied by in-kind donations from the Reva & David Logan Foundation.
During Hunger Action Month, there are many ways you can help Sarah’s Circle fight hunger and homelessness:
- Volunteer: Help prepare and serve meals in our kitchen.
- Provide a Meal: Provide crucial support by contributing and serving a healthy meal or donating sack lunches.
- Donate: A donation of just $5 can provide three meals to a woman in need. Consider becoming a monthly donor for long-term impact.
- Advocate: Share information with your network and encourage others to get involved with Sarah’s Circle.
